Almonds and Apricot kernels

You learn something new every day, a bilingual edition.

Mum bought a snack during her trip to Shanghai. It was called 巴旦木酥, of which 巴旦木 was a puzzle. I had never heard of it, but when I bit into it, it seemed familiar.

Never to be left puzzling for long in the age of the internet/google/wikipedia, is soon had my answer.

It turns out that 巴旦木 is what they call almonds. I had called almonds 杏仁 all my life (and today discovering I had pronounced it wrong thus far…). I then discovered that 杏仁 refers to apricot kernels.

Well, don’t take my word for it. I’m only as reliable as wikipedia and baidu are.
